Q: Do I have to be a student at EVMS to lease an apartment on your property?
A: You must be a student enrolled with EVMS or you must be a doctor in the EVMS residency program.

Q: What if I am late paying my rent?
A: Rent is due on the first of each month and is considered late after the 5th of the month. If rent is paid after the 5th of the month, you will be assessed a late fee (see your lease for amount). If rent continues to remain unpaid, legal procedures up to and including eviction will be taken. Additional legal fees and expenses incurred will be added to the balance due.

Q: Where can I park?
A: There is a parking lot on our property that is for EVMS Campus Housing residents. You will need to present a copy of your vehicle registration to the Campus Housing Manager to obtain a parking pass.

Q: Do the apartments come furnished?
A: We do have some furnished apartments available on a first come, first serve basis. Those apartments rent for an additional $100 per month. If you are interested in renting a furnished unit, please alert the Housing Manager as soon as possible.

Q: What utilities are included in my monthly rent?
A: Water, sewage and sanitation are included in your rent. The tenant is responsible for electric and must have that service turned on in their name at least 2 days prior to moving into their apartment. Having cable and internet are optional services, but would be the responsibility of the tenant.

A: Contact Dominion Energy at 888-667-3000 and have it put in the name of one of the lease holders.

Q: What is the average electric bill cost?
A: Utilities vary based upon such things as number of occupants, personal usage habits, the setting on the thermostat and the outside temperature. Cost varies with the season, but for most tenants, the average is $80 per month.

Q: Are the apartments wired for cable and internet?
A: All apartments have been wired for both cable and internet. You would need to open an account with a service provider of your choice in the name of one of the lease holders. Please note: Antennas or satellite dishes will not be installed on the apartment building or placed outside your apartment on the property.

Q: I am bringing expensive items with me when I move, what do I need to do to protect my belongings?
A: Renters insurance, in the amount of at least $5,000 in personal property coverage, is required for each tenant and occupant over the age of 18 residing at EVMS Campus Housing. Proof of renter’s insurance coverage must be provided to the Housing Manager prior to signing a new lease or renewal of your current lease.

Q: Where can I go to wash my clothes?
A: We have a laundry facility in the apartment complex which is available 24/7. For safety reasons, the laundry room door is locked at all times. An EVMS badge or a key card is issued to the lessee for admittance. The key card can be obtained from the Housing Manager. (Please note, laundry will not be available until January 2023).

Q: I need a mailbox key, who should I contact?
A: We do not disperse mailbox keys here at the office. The Debree post office located at 417 W 20th St, Norfolk, VA 23517 can assist you with obtaining a mailbox key, having your mail held or completing a change of address form when moving out. You will need to provide your lease, $17 and proper ID to obtain a mailbox key.

Q: Can I smoke inside my apartment?
A: No, you cannot smoke in your apartment or anywhere on the housing property. EVMS Campus Housing is part of the Tobacco Free Campus that prohibits tobacco use anywhere in the Eastern Virginia Medical Center. The policy, effective January 1, 2009, is a cooperative venture with Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters.

Q: Is EVMS Campus Housing a safe place to live?
A: EVMS Campus Police and Public Safety provide security services to EVMS Campus Housing and all other EVMS buildings within the medical center complex. In addition to routinely patrolling Campus Housing, they monitor our parking lot via surveillance cameras 24/7. Upon request, they will escort EVMS students/residents to and from EVMS buildings and parking lots 24/7.
